Why we built it
Keeping track of Indian dates is oddly hard. Festival dates move with the lunar calendar, regional traditions disagree by a day, public holiday lists live in a government PDF, and the reminder for your mother's birthday sits in a different app entirely. Most people end up juggling a paper calendar, a couple of apps and a WhatsApp forward from a relative.
We thought everything that matters deserved to live in one calendar — computed properly, checked against real sources, and available whether or not you have signal.
Private by design
No account, no sign-in. Your reminders and settings never leave your device, because there is no server for them to go to. The app collects only limited, non-identifying usage analytics so we can improve it.
The app works offline
Festival, holiday and panchang data ships inside the Android app, and the Panchang is computed on your phone — so it works on a train, in a temple basement, or with mobile data switched off. (This website, naturally, needs a connection.)
Deliberately lightweight
A small download that stays responsive on older and budget phones — not just on the latest flagship.
Rooted in the tradition
Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Vara, presented the way a panchang actually reads — not flattened into a generic Western calendar.
How we handle accuracy
Panchang values are computed from ephemeris data using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, with sunrise and sunset for New Delhi. Festival dates are derived from those calculations and then cross-checked against established panchang sources before they ship.
Where a date genuinely is contested — a kshaya or vriddhi tithi, or a moon-sighting-dependent observance — we mark it as tentative rather than pretending to a certainty that doesn't exist. Regional traditions and local sunrise times can legitimately shift an observance by a day.
For ritual decisions, please confirm with your local panchang or family priest. Kaalo is an informational aid, not a religious authority.
